With everyone’s health and safety in mind, HCII2021 will be organized and run as a virtual conference under the auspices of 21 distinguished international boards. Please visit the Conference website for the list of topics of each Thematic Area / Affiliated Conference.
An award will be presented to the Best Paper of each of the HCII 2021 Thematic Areas / Affiliated Conferences and the Best Poster extended abstract.
The Conference Proceedings will be published by Springer in a multi-volume set. Papers will appear in volumes of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) and Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series. Poster Extended Abstracts in the form of short research papers will be published in the Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) series.
The Conference Program is adapted to suit the needs of the virtual format. Parallel sessions and tutorials will run concurrently over the six-day period (24-29 July 2021). In this way, the daily load of the conference is four hours (two sessions, two-hours each, with a half-hour break in-between).
You still have the opportunity to present the latest results of your work to an international audience, by submitting a proposal for a Paper or a Poster presentation.
Submit "Late Breaking Work" - PAPER proposals: Prospective authors should submit extended abstracts (800 words) corresponding to one of the Conference Thematic Areas. Following a fast-track peer-review process, a decision is communicated to the authors. After acceptance, the authors, apart from giving an oral presentation during the Conference, will also have the opportunity of having a full paper included in the "HCII 2021 - Late Breaking Papers" Springer LNCS Proceedings to be published after the conference, according to the below timetable:
Submit "Late Breaking Work" - POSTER proposals: Prospective authors should submit abstracts (300 words). Following a fast-track peer-review process, a decision is communicated to the authors. After acceptance, the authors, apart from presenting their work during the Conference, will also have the opportunity of having an extended poster abstract (short research paper) included in the "HCII 2021 - Late Breaking Posters" Springer CCIS Proceedings to be published after the conference, according to the below timetable:
The “Late Breaking Work” paper and poster volumes, also published by Springer, together with the volumes to be published before the conference, will comprise the full set of the HCII 2021 Conference Proceedings.
Given the continuing difficulties associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, HCII 2021 is pleased to offer complimentary attendance to an additional Tutorial for each Tutorial paid registration. This offer is also extended to existing (already paid) Tutorial registrations.

“Advances in VR Technology and the Post-Coronavirus Society”.
The spread of COVID-19 is threatening to permanently change our society. Among other things, it has increased the cost of human contact and greatly restricted international travel. The future is uncertain and HCII2021 will be held as a virtual conference. This change is reminiscent of the oil shocks of approximately 50 years ago. The rise in energy costs forced changes in the industrial structures of countries around the world from heavy industries to light, thin, and short industries such as information technology. Here again, we are faced with similar challenges. Consequently, society will be changed irreversibly.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is playing an important role in this major change, particularly for VR, a technology that can transcend both time and space. VR has a 30-year history and has only recently found opportunities to spread in society. Telepresence technology that is capable of transmitting a distant presence will expand the potential of teleworking beyond office-based work to a whole new level. In addition, it may even replace some traditional physical transportation technologies.
By enriching virtual spaces as a new space for activity, we can regain activities that were reduced due to COVID-19. To achieve this, the existing currently technically under-developed VR technology must be further refined such as by expanding to networks and interface devices based on new principles, which will require technical advancement to the second generation. Thus, what exactly is the second generation of VR? This talk will introduce a series of rapidly advancing new VR technologies such as WebVR technology that enables users to easily experience VR through a web browser, pseudo-haptic technology that generates haptic sensations without complex mechanisms, and interface technology that uses new principles such as direct nerve stimulation. In addition, the social impact of these technologies will be discussed.
HCII 2021 is organized and will be run as a virtual conference and all fees are offered with a 50% discount of the 'in-person' fees.
Detailed information about the registration fees is available through the Conference website.
World Usability Day is pleased to announce the sponsorship by and collaboration with the HCI International (HCII) conference for the annual Design Challenge. This collaboration brings together two organizations who have similar and supporting goals. HCII provides an international forum for the dissemination and exchange of up-to-date scientific information on theoretical, generic and applied areas. World Usability Day aims to raise standards so that technology works to harness human potential. This work is accomplished by building a community of common practice and supporting that through events occurring around the world that bring together different communities to work together to make our world easy for all.
The Gold, Silver and Bronze recipients of the World Usability Day Design Challenge Awards are cordially invited, with complimentary registration, to present their innovative, impactful design at the HCI International Conferences. The announcement of the winners for the upcoming competition will be on the World Usability Day, 11 November 2021 and the awards will be conferred during the HCII 2022 conference opening ceremony, on 28 June 2022 in Gothenburg, Sweden, where they are invited to present their work on 29 June 2022.
Introducing a New Book on the Design and Computer Art of Aaron Marcus
(Letterform Archive - LFA)
A pioneer in computer graphics and user-interface design, Aaron Marcus was one of the first to use computer technology in art, exploring virtual reality, experimental visible languages, and information visualization in the early days of digital media. This is the first book on his career and life.
Christopher Wickens, one of the foremost international authorities on attention, has authored an open-access paper in the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction. Wickens in this article discussed two general concepts of attention: (1) As a filter of selective attention that selects and admits channels of information from the environment to be processed; (2) as a resource to enable subsequent information processing, constrained by the individual demand of tasks, and particularly the collective demands of multiple tasks needing to be performed concurrently defining the limits of multitasking.
Attention: Theory, Principles, Models, and Applications
