HCI International News, Number 25, September 2007

HIGHLIGHTS

HCII 2007: Another Success Story

In the historic city of Beijing, P.R. China, the HCI International 2007 Conference was held under the auspices of the distinguished international boards of 225 members from 35 countries. This conference was one of the biggest ever organized, with an unprecedented number of 2,300 academics, scientists, researchers, and practitioners from 76 countries gathered to share their recent findings in the fields related to Human-Computer Interaction and Information Society Technologies. This year, HCI International and the affiliated Conferences explored a wide variety of new hot topics which reflect and contribute to a paradigm shift towards ubiquitous interaction, intelligent environments and interactive technologies supporting virtually any aspect of human life and activities in a global and social perspective.

Through over 256 parallel sessions, 371 poster presentations, 18 tutorials and 2 workshops, participants presented their major findings in 10 thematic areas, namely 10 thematic areas, namely Ergonomics and Health Aspects of Work with Computers, Human Interface and the Management of Information, Human-Computer Interaction, Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics, Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction, Virtual Reality, Usability and Internationalization, Online Communities and Social Computing, Augmented Cognition, and Digital Human Modeling.

The Conference Proceedings have been published by Springer in the LNCS/LNAI series and consist of 17 volumes containing 1,681 papers. This encyclopedia of HCI knowledge is also available on-line through the LNCS Digital Library, readily accessible by all subscribing libraries around the world. This is an excellent resource for academics, researchers and libraries around the world.

The program also featured 1 plenary session. Prof. Takeo Kanade from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA, and National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Tokyo, Japan, was the keynote speaker. Dr. Kanade in a very appealing and interesting presentation, entitled “Digital Human Modeling and Quality of Life Technology”, reviewed recent progress in the domain of human functional modeling, and its use for design and operation of a variety of model–rich context-aware systems targeted to enhancing quality of life, stressing how the use of models enables to design systems and products that fit better to human needs, that are more capable, and that are easier to use.

HCI International 2007 hosted an exhibition of 24 booths representing a variety of services, products, education and a research institution.

It will cover a broad spectrum of themes related to Human Computer Interaction, including theoretical issues, methods, tools, processes and case studies in HCI design, as well as novel interaction techniques, interfaces and applications.

The program will feature, among others: pre-conference half-day and full-day tutorials, parallel sessions, poster presentations, an opening session with a keynote address, an exhibition including demonstrations by industrial companies.

The Conference Proceedings will be published by Springer.

Brief Book Review: Information Foraging Theory

Frameworks, theories and models of the information foraging theory, the science that “aims to explain and predict how people will best shape themselves for their information environments and how information environments can best be shaped for people” are explained and discussed in the 204 pages of this book. Through the 10 chapters of the book, the author clearly explains the various models of information foraging theory: elementary (chapter 2), cognitive (chapter 6) stochastic (chapter 7) social (chapter 8), design heuristics, and engineering (chapter (9). The two chapters on the ecology of information foraging on the World Wide Web (chapter 3) and Rational Analyses of information Scent and Web Foraging (chapter 4) are particularly enlightening.

Although the mathematical modeling and complex charts and graphs might put off some novice readers, actually they are the most enriching parts of the book which help provide an intelligent explanation of the content.

This book is an excellent resource for all researchers providing an enriching experience for all practitioner readers in the field of HCI and related fields.

Please join us at the HCI for Community & International Development Workshop to be held at the CHI 2008 Conference, 5-10 April 2008, Florence, Italy.

This workshop explores the challenges in applying, extending and inventing appropriate HCI methods to International Economic and Community Development.

Topics include:

  • experiences of interaction design in developing countries or with underserved populations in developed countries;
  • participatory methods in economic and community development projects;
  • innovative techniques for engaging users in developing world contexts.

To participate in this workshop, please submit a 2-page position paper describing your experience, findings or interests relevant to the themes of the workshop.

Deadline for submissions is 3 October 2007. Notification of acceptance by 28 November 2007. Papers can be submitted by email to John C Thomas at jcthomas@us.ibm.com
