HCII 2009: Another Success Story

A truly international event, with 75% of its participants coming from outside the USA, HCI International 2009 was held under the auspices of the distinguished international boards of 262 members from 35 countries. It was one of the bigger events organized in the fields related to Human-Computer Interaction and Information Society Technologies, and attracted an impressive number of over 1900 participants from 73 countries, representing the research and academic communities, as well as industry.

HCI International 2009, the 13th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction was held in San Diego, CA, USA, 19-24 July, jointly with the:

  • Symposium on Human Interface (Japan) 2009
  • 8th International Conference on Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics
  • 5th International Conference on Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction
  • 3rd International Conference on Virtual and Mixed Reality
  • 3rd International Conference on Internationalization, Design and Global Development
  • 3rd International Conference on Online Communities and Social Computing
  • 5th International Conference on Augmented Cognition
  • 2nd International Conference on Digital Human Modeling
  • 1st International Conference on Human Centered Design

The Conference Programme was organized into 11 thematic areas, namely Ergonomics and Health Aspects of Work with Computers, Human Interface and the Management of Information, Human-Computer Interaction, Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics, Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction, Virtual and Mixed Reality, Internationalization, Design and Global Development, Online Communities and Social Computing, Augmented Cognition, Digital Human Modeling, and Human Centered Design.

The programme featured a plenary session, 215 parallel paper sessions, 22 tutorials, and 209 poster presentations. The keynote speaker was Daniel Rosenberg, Senior Vice President, Product User Experience, Office of the CTO, SAP Corporation, USA. His enlightening talk entitled "The Industrialization of Sustainability: Future roles, responsibilities and opportunities for the HCI profession", addressed the role of HCI in the context of sustainability and the global economy.

During the Opening Plenary Session, on the 21st of July 2009, for the first time in the history of the HCI International Conference series, fourteen awards were conferred.

Eleven awards were given to the best papers in each Affiliated Conference / Thematic Area. The winners received a plaque and a certificate. Among these eleven best papers, one paper was selected as Best HCI International 2009 Conference paper. The winner, the paper entitled "The User Knows: Considering the Cognitive Contribution of the User in the Design of Auditory Warnings" by Catherine Stevens and Agnes Petocz from the University of Western Sydney, Australia, was announced during the Opening Plenary Session, and received a golden medal award and a certificate. An honorable mention certificate was also awarded to the runner up (2nd Best) Paper, entitled "BC(eye) – Combining Eye-Gaze Input with Brain-Computer Interaction" by Roman Vilimek from Siemens AG, Germany, and Thorsten Zander from Berlin University of Technology, Germany. Furthermore, a Best Poster award (plaque and certificate) was also conferred to the best poster extended abstract.

Professor Gavriel Salvendy, founder of the HCI International Conference and scientific advisor to HCII2009, received a silver medal in celebration of the 25th (Silver) anniversary and in recognition and appreciation of his protagonist role in the HCI International conference series.

The Conference Proceedings have been published by Springer in the LNCS/LNAI series, and consist of 17 volumes containing 1397 papers in total by 4110 authors. The Proceedings are also available on–line through the LNCS Digital Library, readily accessible by all subscribing libraries around the world.
HCI International 2009 also hosted an exhibition of 28 booths representing a variety of services, products, education and a research institution.

Book Announcement

"Constructive Dialogue Modelling
Speech Interaction and Rational Agents"
By: Kristiina Jokinen (University of Tampere and University of Helsinki)
April 2009, ISBN 13: 9780470060261.

Dialogue Modelling: Speech Interaction and Rational Agents provides an overview of the current dialogue technology and research trends in spoken dialogue systems, presenting a coherent perspective of AI-based cooperative interaction management. The book complements existing research regarding human-computer interfaces, speech and language technology, and communication studies in general, bringing different view-points together and integrating them into a single point of reference.

Constructive Dialogue Modelling:

  • Presents a guide to spoken dialogue technology and current research trends.
  • Provides an overview of human factors in dialogue systems and delivers a new metaphor for human-computer interaction and computer as agent.
  • Explains the architecture of dialogue systems using examples from systems such as Interact and DUMAS
  • Offers a comprehensive overview of original research into the new trends in speech dialogue technology in light of innovations such as ubiquitous computing.

This book will provide essential reading for industrial designers and interface engineers, university researchers and teachers, computer scientists, human communication researchers, speech and language technologists, cognitive engineers/cognitive scientists, as well as social and media researchers, and psychologists. Advanced students and researchers in computer science, speech and language technologies, psychology and communication research will find this text of interest.
