Journal of Interacting with Computers: Brian Shackel: A dedication

This special issue of "Interacting with Computers" is dedicated to Professor Brian Shackel (1927 – 2007), a pioneer researcher in Ergonomics / Human Factors, and according to Andrew Dillon "the grandfather of the field" of Human-Computer Interaction. In this issue, the reader will find an introductory note by Dianne Murray and several articles by Professor Brian Shackel, including:

  • Designing for people in the age of information
  • Human-computer interaction - Whence and whither?
  • Usability - Context, framework, definition, design and evaluation
  • A test-first view of usability

Brian Shackel's contribution to the field of Human–Computer Interaction is then reviewed by several authors, including:

  • Back to the future: A retrospective on early predictions, by Russell Beale
  • Inventing HCI: The grandfather of the field, by Andrew Dillon
  • Brian Shackel’s contribution to the written history of Human–Computer Interaction, by Jonathan Grudin
  • Telescreens, keypens, and the expert: A 60 year snapshot, by Jan Noyes

The review of Brian Shackel’s work provides an excellent historical review of the development of HCI research and practice.

New book: Interactive Graphics for Data Analysis: Principles and Examples

A brief note regarding a book that might be equally of interest for infovis researchers as well as for infovis users. "Interactive Graphics for Data Analysis: Principles and Examples" is divided into two parts. The first part illustrates general principles how graphical methods are most efficiently used to analyze data. The second part uses nine real world datasets to show the application of these techniques as nine fully worked out case studies. The book uses the Mondrian visualization tool throughout the book, though the techniques and case studies are presented (almost) independently from any specific implementation. A 30 page appendix gives a quick overview and introduction of the Mondrian software.

There is more information on the book at http://www.interactivegraphics.org, which also contains some sample chapters for preview.
